Santa Caterina Valfurva is a hamlet within the municipality of Valfurva, nestled at the heart of the Stelvio National Park at an altitude of 1,738 metres. This destination is particularly renowned as a premier ski resort in Lombardy, welcoming winter sports enthusiasts from November through to the end of April. What began as a small agricultural village in the Valtellina, Valfurva rose to prominence in the 17th century as a spa town following the discovery of iron-rich mineral springs, identified by Don Baldassare Bellotti, the local parish priest.
In fact, there were two springs flowing from beneath the surface: one rich in sulphur, and another containing “acqua forte”, rich in iron. Over time, thermal activities were complemented by tourism, thanks to the numerous mountaineers – particularly from England and Germany – who loved scaling the surrounding peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale massif. Regrettably, the thermal springs dried up in the 20th century and the town’s spa centre was destroyed. Today, the town is chiefly celebrated for its ski runs, whilst its thermal heritage has largely given way to the neighbouring resort of Bormio.
Santa Caterina Valfurva is a true paradise for those who love winter mountain pursuits. The resort boasts 35 km of pistes, comprising 2 blue runs, 12 red runs and 2 black runs. Among the black runs stands the Debora Compagnoni piste, which has hosted the Alpine Ski World Cup several times. State-of-the-art lift systems allow you to reach an altitude of 2,700 metres and ski down the slopes of Monte Sobretta whilst taking in truly breathtaking panoramas. Cross-country skiing is available on the Valtellina piste, which has also hosted World Cup races. In addition to the competitive course, there are several leisure loops of 2, 3 and 5 km. Santa Caterina Valfurva ski resort offers various ski pass options that can be purchased online via the official website or at the lift stations. Available passes include daily, multi-day, as well as monthly and seasonal passes.
Additionally, at Santa Caterina Valfurva you can purchase the Bormio Skipass, which grants access to 3 ski areas with a combined total of 110 km of pistes. Alongside Santa Caterina, these are: Bormio (15 lifts and 50 km of pistes) and Cima Piazzi-San Colombano (12 lifts and 25 km of pistes). Currently, the three ski areas are connected only by a ski bus service.

Of particular interest are trails that showcase First World War heritage sites, where you can see trenches built over a century ago and retrace many of the historic events of that era. Valfurva also offers plenty of cycling routes, from leisurely paths such as Parco Isola S. Caterina Valfurva to adrenaline-fuelled mountain bike descents.

The best way to reach Santa Caterina Valfurva is by car. Travelling from Milan, take the SS36 Milan-Lecco-Colico road followed by the SS38 Stelvio road towards Santa Caterina Valfurva.
From Bergamo, take the SP342 then the SS36 and SS38. Visitors from Trento should travel along the SP42 and then the SS38 Stelvio road. From Livigno, take the SS301 towards Santa Caterina.
The nearest railway station is Tirano, which can be reached from Milan by train in approximately two and a half hours. Tirano is then connected to Santa Caterina by bus services.
