Sitting at 1,816 metres altitude, with its historic centre nestled between the Stelvio National Park and the Engadin valley, Livigno is a true gem of the Valtellina. As Lombardy’s most northerly municipality, this popular tourist resort draws visitors from across Italy year-round, thanks to its spectacular natural landscapes. The earliest records of the town date back to the 12th century, when Livigno was a small farming community under the control of Bormio. Its economic growth was always hampered by geographical isolation and by Bormio, which prevented Livigno from managing trade across the region’s high mountain passes. Only in the 17th century did the town finally gain a degree of autonomy and exemptions from duties and taxes.
At the start of the 20th century, a connecting road was built between Bormio and Livigno via the Foscagno Pass, though initially it was only passable in summer; winter access wasn’t established until 1952. In the 1970s, the Munt La Schera Tunnel opened to private traffic, linking Livigno with Switzerland and the wider Northern Europe. A few years later, Livigno was recognised as a duty-free zone, and the town embarked on a period of rapid tourist development. What had once been a small agricultural and pastoral hamlet transformed into one of the Alps’ most sought-after tourist destinations, boosted by investment in modern infrastructure and hospitality facilities.
Today, Livigno is renowned as one of Lombardy’s top ski resorts, as well as a major shopping destination and a thriving summer destination thanks to its natural heritage. During winter, Livigno boasts state-of-the-art facilities and excellent services for skiers, snowboarders, cross-country skiers and telemark enthusiasts alike. In summer, the Livigno plateau, surrounded by the Rhaetian Alps, becomes an ideal base for walking, trekking and mountain exploration amidst stunning alpine scenery.
Livigno is one of Europe’s most renowned winter resorts, offering a variety of sports activities, excellent shopping and authentic local cuisine. The Livigno ski area spans 115 km of pistes, comprising 30 km of beginner runs, 65 km for advanced skiers and 20 km for freeriders. The ski area also features four snow parks of varying sizes.
Thanks to its position, Livigno allows you to ski on both sides of the mountain, with the Mottolino resort on one side and Carosello 3000 on the other. In the central Alpine area, you can reach pistes at 2,800 metres altitude and enjoy breathtaking views. This ensures Livigno has a ski season running from November to May with excellent snow conditions throughout.
In addition to expert ski instructors and a beginner school area, Livigno offers a dedicated sledging run, a bob sleigh track and a play area for children who want to enjoy the snow without skiing. Around thirty kilometres of cross-country ski trails await enthusiasts, who in December can watch “La Sgambeda”, an international long-distance skiing race.
Since 2017, the area has been equipped with a Biathlon Arena, featuring 12 electronic shooting stations suitable for both beginners and experienced athletes. Snowshoe walkers can explore various beautiful trails of different lengths and difficulty levels.
The area is also home to wonderful mountain huts, restaurants and après-ski venues both at the foot of the slopes and at altitude, where you can relax with traditional Valtellina dishes. You don’t need to be wearing skis to enjoy lunch at altitude – the main huts are accessible via the cable cars.
The Livigno ski area offers a single ski pass valid on all lift systems across both sides of the ski area (Mottolino and Carosello 3000). Various pass options are available, including full-day passes, morning and afternoon passes, multi-day passes and seasonal passes.
Many seasonal offers and promotions are available for families and young skiers. Ski passes can be purchased at the ticket offices at the base of the lifts or online on the official website.
Many don’t realise that Livigno is also known as “the little Tibet” for its stunning landscapes that evoke the Tibetan plateau. Over the years, the plateau has attracted many artists, including writer Alfredo Martinelli, who published his book “Livigno, Little Tibet” in 1967. Livigno has developed a comprehensive summer tourism offering, with many visitors heading here to escape the city heat and enjoy spectacular panoramas.
The slopes that turn white with snow in winter transform into green panoramic trails and adrenaline-fuelled downhill tracks in summer. From beginners to expert riders, everyone can use the lift systems on both sides of the mountain for high-altitude mountain biking excursions, reach the Bikepark pistes or enjoy thrilling descents through forests. The area features three exceptional bike parks.
The Mottolino Bike Park is ideal for downhill and freeride enthusiasts of all abilities, while the Carosello 3000 Mountain Park features trails for all levels and enduro routes; finally, the Sitas Mountain Park is perfect for beginner and intermediate riders, home to the “Bike Academy” (MTB8), a 5 km trail with 8 practice zones designed specifically for newcomers!
Livigno lies within the Stelvio National Park and borders the Swiss National Park, making it perfect for walkers and nordic hikers with plenty of trails to explore. The town caters to everyone – from easy family walks to multi-day trekking routes. Various trails lead to numerous mountain huts situated above 2,000 metres altitude, offering spectacular vistas.
The town centre features a cycle and pedestrian path leading to Lake Livigno, where you can stop for a picnic with lake views or continue to Lake Cancano. One of the most beautiful routes is the “Giro delle Tee”, an 18 km circular trail that reveals the ancient Tee – the distinctive wooden chalets typical of the area.
Children can enjoy the Kids Area Adventure at the arrival point of the Carosello 3000 cable car, where activities stimulate motor skills. The area spans two levels: the upper level is for older children (6-12 years), while the lower is for younger ones (3-6 years).
Alternatively, families can visit the Larix Adventure Park, set within an ancient larch forest near the town centre. Here, visitors can access nine trails of varying difficulty levels, featuring suspended bridges, cables and agility-testing routes.
Few realise that Livigno, at 1,816 metres altitude, is Europe’s highest plateau and the world’s second-highest after Mexico City. The town is ideal for high-altitude training. Beyond numerous cycling and running trails, Livigno boasts the Aquagranda sports centre, combining sport, fun and wellbeing.

Livigno’s charming pedestrian-only historic centre is lined with shops, bars and restaurants. Walking through the streets, you’ll find numerous shops, boutiques and stores selling everything from electronics and clothing to handicrafts and accessories.
Don’t miss a visit to the Livigno and Trepalle Museum, known as Mus!, which tells the story of how this town transformed from a small farming village into a sought-after tourist destination. Exhibits include everyday tools and implements revealing the area’s agricultural heritage, plus reconstructed interiors of traditional homes.

The town centre is compact, so wherever you stay, getting around on foot or by local bus is easy. Winter is peak season, however, so book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Until the mid-20th century, before the Foscagno Pass opened, Livigno became completely cut off from the rest of the world during winter due to the lack of road access. The pass’s opening finally connected the town to other Lombardy destinations.
Driving from Milan or elsewhere in Lombardy and Piedmont, take the SS36 towards Lecco to Colico, then the SS38 Stelvio road towards Sondrio-Tirano-Bormio. Finally, follow the SS301 Foscagno Pass road to Livigno.
Alternatively, reach the town via the Fuorn Pass and Munt La Schera Tunnel (Gallo Pass border), ideal if arriving from Trentino-Alto Adige, the Veneto, Swiss Engadin or wider Northern Europe.
For train travel, first reach Tirano station, then take a bus to Livigno. During winter months, the Livigno Express coach service connects Milan’s airports (Linate, Malpensa and Bergamo Orio al Serio) with Livigno.
