The Milan Linate International Airport (IATA code: LIN) is Lombardy’s third airport after Malpensa and Bergamo Orio al Serio. Named after aviation pioneer Enrico Forlanini, the airport is commonly known simply as Linate Airport, after the Linate locality within Peschiera Borromeo municipality where it’s situated.

Linate offers connections to major Italian cities and short-haul European destinations, making it Italy’s seventh busiest airport by passenger traffic. The airport has two runways and a single terminal housing shops, bars, restaurants, car rental agencies, several car parks and all traveller facilities.

Getting to and from Milan Linate Airport

With excellent transport links, Linate Airport makes it easy to reach the main cities across northern Italy. The airport sits just under 8 km from Milan, 70 km from Novara and 60 km from Lecco. Given its proximity to Lombardy’s capital, reaching central Milan from Linate Airport is straightforward via several options: ATM bus line 73, Linate Shuttle, or Autostradale buses.

Alternatively, you can take the train to Milan Forlanini station, from where bus number 73 will get you to the airport in around ten minutes. A new metro line (M4) is set to open by 2022, connecting Linate Airport with Milan’s southern districts via the historic city centre.

ATM Bus Line 73

Milan Duomo M1 – M3 (Piazza Diaz) is connected to Linate Airport via bus line 73. The service runs daily with a journey time of approximately 60 minutes. Tickets are available from authorised retailers (tobacconists, newsagents, bars), at ATM Points, from automatic machines or via the dedicated app. Line 73 runs with departures every 10–20 minutes, depending on the time of day. A single ticket costs €1.50, the same as a standard urban bus ticket.

Linate Shuttle – Airpullman

Those wanting to reach Milan Linate Airport from Central Station (or vice versa) can use the Linate Shuttle service, which connects the station to the airport via Piazzale Dateo.

The service runs daily with a journey time of approximately 25 minutes. A single ticket costs €5, or €9 for a return ticket. Tickets can be purchased on board without surcharge, at any authorised retailer or online.

Autostradale

The airport and Milan Central Station are also connected by Autostradale coaches. The service runs from 7:45 to 22:45, with a journey time of approximately 25 minutes and departures every 30 minutes or so. The bus makes just one stop at Milan Lambrate.

Tickets can be purchased online or directly on board for €5 one-way or €9 return.

Taxi

Given the short distance, you can also reach Milan by taxi, though there are no fixed fares, so the price varies according to distance, traffic and time of day.

Private transfer

An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Milan airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.

It is the best solution if you do not want to waste time, do not want to use public transport, have a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. To book a private transfer to or from Milan airport visit this site.

Car hire

If you’ve organised a road trip or staged journey, consider hiring a car from one of the rental agencies at the airport. The airport sits right by the exit to Milan’s Tangenziale Est ring road, which connects well to motorways A1 and A4.

To rent a car in Milan we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.

Connections to other destinations

Buses depart Linate Airport for major local destinations including Milan Lambrate, Fiera Milano Rho Pero, Monza, Bergamo and Brescia. Services also connect Linate directly to both Milan Malpensa Airport and Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport. From Linate, you can reach the main ski resorts across northern Italy—including Pinzolo, Campiglio, San Martino Di Castrozza, Primiero, Val Di Fassa, Val Di Fiemme, Val Di Sole, Passo Del Tonale, Valle Dell’Adige and Alpe Cimbra—via the Flyski Shuttle service. The Livigno Express line connects the airport to the city of Livigno.

Finally, Flixbus services offer long-distance connections between the airport and major cities across Italy and Europe.
