Lombardy Weather

Thanks to its excellent location and extensive, diverse landscapes, Lombardy is the perfect region to visit at any time of year. Those looking to organise a winter retreat can choose destinations such as Livigno or Ponte di Legno, whilst the region’s numerous towns offer a historical and cultural heritage worth exploring throughout the year.

In general, Lombardy benefits from a temperate subcontinental climate with warm summers and cold winters. However, it would be reductive to describe this region’s climate with such a simple statement. The diversity of its territory and geographical features mean that Lombardy’s climate is highly varied.

In particular, you can distinguish three main climate zones—mountains, hills and plains—with the addition of the lake district; notably, Lake Garda enjoys a “Mediterranean” microclimate that even allows for olive cultivation and olive oil production.

The most extensive climate zone is the Po Valley, home to numerous tourist destinations such as Milan, Bergamo and Mantua. In these areas, winter months are bitterly cold, with temperatures dropping to around -2 °C, and fog is frequent. Summers, by contrast, are warm and humid, often marked by rain and downpours accompanied by hail. The Po Valley, enclosed by the Alpine arc to the north and the Apennines to the south, is also one of Italy’s least windy regions.

The mountainous zone boasts a typically Alpine climate with cool summers and abundant rainfall, whilst winters are long, harsh and dry. Lombardy is therefore an excellent destination during summer not only for those wishing to visit cities, but also for those seeking a nature-focused break. The third area is the pre-Alpine belt and upper Oltrepò, which enjoys a cool temperate climate that strikes an ideal balance between the two zones.

Finally, the shoulder seasons are an ideal time to explore the region, whether you’re planning a more cultural visit to the major towns or organising trekking and outdoor activities.
