Located in the territory of Barzio municipality, in the province of Lecco, the Piani di Bobbio ski resort is a popular winter destination in Valsassina for winter sports enthusiasts. The name derives from the fact that these territories during the Early Middle Ages were owned by the Abbey of San Colombano in the city of Bobbio, in Piacenza province, which used this area for summer grazing of its livestock.
Piani di Bobbio is one of the most famous ski destinations in Lombardy as it’s a resort suited to families with children, ski enthusiasts and beginners alike. Piani di Bobbio is also the ideal place to spend a day in the snow without travelling too far, as it’s easily accessible from both Milan and Brianza.
The Piani di Bobbio ski resort was opened in the 1950s and was initially equipped with a chairlift that was later replaced by a modern cable car which allows you to reach the slopes from Barzio. The ever-growing number of winter sports enthusiasts, particularly from Lecco and Milan provinces, led to the decision to connect the slopes on the Lecco side of Piani di Bobbio with those on the Bergamo side of Valtorta, creating a single ski area known as Barzio – Piani di Bobbio – Valtorta.
Piani di Bobbio is a Valsassina location surrounded by the Grigne Alps and Orobie Alps groups, which separate it from Valtellina and the Bergamo valleys. This location forms a ski area with Valtorta that boasts 35 km of slopes, a nursery slope for beginners and numerous ski schools. In total, there are six blue runs suitable for beginners, eight red runs and three beautiful black runs ideal for experienced skiers. The resort is accessible from both Barzio and Valtorta, two towns easily reached by car.
This location is ideal not only for those who love skiing but also for cross-country skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts. In particular, the Rododendro cross-country ski run starts at 1,673 metres altitude and reaches a maximum of 1,720 metres with a total length of 5.28 km. The run is FIS-approved and hosts national and international level races. Another option is the Tre Signori route at Valtorta, with loops totalling 10 km.
If you enjoy snowboarding, you can have fun at Bobbio Park which spans an area of 1,500 m² divided into 5 sections. In addition, there are also snowshoe trails (for both beginners and experienced walkers) and an area for tobogganing and sledging. There are also numerous mountain huts and lodges both at the base and at altitude where you can enjoy a hot meal or relax after some runs.
The Barzio – Piani di Bobbio – Valtorta ski resort allows you to purchase various types of skipass, such as daily, multi-day and seasonal passes. In addition to these, hourly passes are available (2, 3 or 4 hours) suitable for those learning. You can purchase the skipass online or at the ticket offices at the ski lifts. Alternatively, you can also top up your Bobbio card or Snowit card, either online or at the ticket offices.
Piani di Bobbio is an ideal destination not only in winter but also in summer when the need to escape the city heat is strong. This location is perfect for those who love organising activities in the great outdoors, horse riding excursions or mountain bike itineraries. One of its advantages is the proximity to the main Lombardy cities such as Milan, Monza and Brianza in general, a detail that makes it possible to reach this location even for a day trip.
During the summer months too, the ski lifts take visitors up to higher altitudes where you’ll find trails and routes to explore on foot for both seasoned hikers and families with children. Among the most scenic routes is the Periplo dei Campelli, a panoramic path that allows you to walk around the Campelli Group and enjoy stunning views from the Lecco Prealps to the Bergamo Orobie. For mountain biking enthusiasts, there’s the Bike Park Gravità 0 located at the top of Piani di Bobbio and accessible via the Barzio cable car. Here you’ll also find over 10 km of slopes of varying levels and difficulty suitable for both beginners and experienced riders.
Piani di Bobbio falls within Barzio municipality, which is therefore the best location to stay in this area. The town isn’t very large but offers a decent number of simple and welcoming accommodation options. For those skiing, the recommended lodgings are those close to the ski lifts. Another option is to stay in Valtorta, a small village in Valle Stabina which is also part of the ski area but located on the Bergamo side. Alternatively, you can find accommodation near Lecco, which is approximately 17 km from Barzio.
To reach Piani di Bobbio, follow the signs for Barzio municipality. This location can easily be reached by car from the main Lombardy cities. Those coming from Lecco can first take the SP62 and then the SP64. If you’re travelling from Milan, you need to take the SS36 Lake Como and Spluga road and then the SS36DIR. From Bergamo it’s possible to travel first along the SP342 and then along the SS36. Those travelling by train can reach the Lecco railway station and from there take a SAL Lecco bus heading towards Barzio.
