Lake Como sits at the heart of a pre-Alpine region and is renowned worldwide for the breathtaking landscapes that have captivated artists, writers, filmmakers and poets. Also known as Lago di Lario, this body of water has the distinctive shape of an inverted “Y”, with the towns of Como and Lecco located at the southern tip of the two arms, whilst the Colico basin lies further north. Its spectacular setting represents a perfect blend of natural and architectural heritage and has been attracting visitors from across the globe for centuries.
Thanks to its unique climate, ancient Romans are said to have cultivated laurel plantations in these areas, with the name Lago di Lario believed to derive from the Latin term “laurus” (laurel). Welcoming, hospitable and steeped in tradition, Lake Como boasts numerous grand villas, historic palaces and splendid hotels. Along its shores, you can also explore charming villages and small towns that feature intimate historic centres and preserve a truly ancient history.
Lake Como is considered Italy’s deepest lake, and the best way to explore it is undoubtedly by boat journey, which allows you to visit not only the various towns but also admire the surrounding landscape. Few know that the lake’s symbol is a small rowing boat called a “batell”, also known as “Lucia” because legend has it that Lucia Mondella (the protagonist of The Betrothed) fled from Lecco in this very boat.
Strolling along the waterfront, shopping in the historic village alleyways, immersing yourself in the surrounding nature and savouring the excellent local cuisine are just some of the experiences you can enjoy at Lake Como, which many consider Italy’s most beautiful lake.
The main towns overlooking Lago di Lario are Como and Lecco, situated on the right and left arms respectively. Beyond these, there are countless other charming towns such as Bellagio, Menaggio, Cernobbio and Varenna which, thanks to their timeless allure, attract thousands of visitors. The lake is perfect for a relaxing stay, but there are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. In summer, you can try water sports (sailing, diving, water skiing, windsurfing), nature excursions and countless other outdoor pursuits; in the colder months, the surrounding Alps prove ideal for winter sports enthusiasts.
The city of Como sits at the southernmost point of the western arm of Lago di Lario, in an area characterised by rolling green hills. Appreciated for its strategic position by the ancient Romans, Como has become a highly sought-after destination for international tourism, with many visitors from the United States.
Your visit to the city can begin at the Como Cathedral, one of northern Italy’s most important examples of late Gothic architecture, and continue with a stop at the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio, a magnificent example of Lombard Romanesque architecture. For stunning views over Lago di Lario, you can take the funicular railway to Brunate, which many consider the “balcony” overlooking the lake. Archaeology enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the Roman Baths, built at the behest of senator Pliny the Younger.
Called the “pearl of the lake” for its enchanting scenery, Bellagio is a marvellous village situated on the so-called Triangolo Lariano, the area between the two arms of Lake Como. Thanks to its stunning natural vistas and mild, temperate climate, the town is one of the most coveted destinations on Lake Como.
Its centre still preserves the ancient village where you can admire shops, artisan workshops, bars, restaurants and numerous historic villas surrounded by age-old parks and gardens. Among the most enchanting villas in the area are Villa Melzi d’Eril, Villa Serbelloni and Villa Giulia. A stroll along the waterfront to reach Punta Spartivento is not to be missed – it’s considered one of Lake Como’s most captivating viewpoints.
Menaggio is a Lake Como town that has beautifully preserved its 19th-century village charm. Considered by many as a truly exclusive destination, Menaggio is ideal for those seeking a trip centred on relaxation, history and nature.
The historic village comprises a centre and three hamlets (Croce, Nobiallo and Loveno), which house ancient churches and many grand villas. Surrounding the town is abundant lush greenery that makes it easy to organise various outdoor activities. Menaggio also boasts an exclusive golf course and the chance, in summer, to enjoy water sports.
Not far from Como, we find the beautiful resort of Cernobbio, which is internationally famous for its grand villas and historic residences that form part of this region’s architectural heritage.
An ideal destination for a peaceful weekend, Cernobbio has its beating heart in Piazza Risorgimento, which overlooks the lake and houses the Monument to the Fallen, created by Angelo Galli. Along the waterfront, you can also admire enchanting villas such as Villa d’Este, now a luxury hotel, and Villa d’Erba.
Known as the birthplace of famous writer Alessandro Manzoni, Lecco is a city nestled on Lake Como that boasts a truly unique architectural heritage. Especially during the 19th century, under Austrian rule, prestigious palaces and buildings in elegant neoclassical style were constructed throughout the city.
Wandering through the city streets, you can now admire the Basilica of San Niccolò, with its bell tower known as “il matitone”, and the Ponte Azzone Visconti, which was also mentioned by Alessandro Manzoni in the opening lines of The Betrothed. Another must-see is Villa Manzoni, the house where writer Alessandro Manzoni spent his youth, now converted into a museum.
Characterised by a small, compact historic centre, Varenna is known for being a town of considerable charm. Its atmosphere makes it perfect for a romantic getaway for couples, whilst the splendid surrounding landscapes appeal to outdoor enthusiasts.
Be sure to walk the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a short route leading to the town’s landing stage from where you can enjoy stunning lake views. Other sights to visit include the ancient Church of San Giorgio, dating from the 13th century, Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero.
Lake Como boasts welcoming and hospitable resorts characterised by a wide range of accommodation. From luxury hotels to stays in historic residences, from apartments to charming B&Bs, Lake Como caters to all its visitors’ needs. However, a Lake Como holiday has become synonymous in recent years with an exclusive experience that often requires a substantial budget.
Major towns like Como and Lecco offer numerous facilities at various price points and are convenient to reach, being close to motorways. However, both towns are located at the southern tip of the lake, so be prepared to travel several kilometres by car to reach other destinations.
Charming villages such as Bellagio, Varenna and Cernobbio are certainly the right choice for those without budget constraints who want to fully experience the lake’s atmosphere. Other peaceful towns along the lake shore include Laglio, Colico, Brunate and Sala Comacina.
The best way to explore Lake Como is undoubtedly by water, as this allows you to avoid road traffic and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Gestione Governativa Navigazione Laghi (GGNL) operates services connecting the various towns via a fleet serving Como, Menaggio, Bellagio, Lecco, Varenna and Colico.
Travel is possible by three means: the hydrofoil, which offers a fast service, the ferry, suitable for transporting cars, motorcycles and passengers, and the boat, slower than the hydrofoil but allowing you to admire the surrounding landscape and all the small villages perched along the lake shore.
During the summer season, the “Central Lake Shuttle” service is also active, guaranteeing constant connections between the various Central Lake piers, from Lenno to Varenna. Alternatively, private companies also offer taxi services or guided tours of Lago di Lario.
The Lake Como is situated in northern Lombardy, straddling the territories of Como and Lecco provinces. At roughly 50 km from Milan, it's a popular weekend retreat and day-trip destination for Milanese visitors seeking a quick escape from the city.
