The town is indeed rich in historical sites, stately palaces and magnificent villas that often host luxury hotels and distinguished restaurants.
Given its international renown, Como boasts a wide range of accommodation to suit all visitor requirements. Como’s historic centre is also known as the “Walled City” because it has preserved its original layout, surrounded by medieval walls with watchtowers. This area is an excellent choice for staying whilst visiting the town, with its heart at Piazza del Duomo, from which numerous narrow streets lead off, allowing you to explore the city centre and eventually reach the lakeside.
Here you’ll find hotels, apartments and welcoming B&Bs that let you fully experience the city’s atmosphere; the centre is also brimming with shops, bars and restaurants serving excellent local cuisine. It’s worth noting that accommodation in the centre is of high standard, offers excellent services but can also be quite expensive.
Romantic and lively, Como’s lakefront area, also known as “Lario”, is one of the most coveted places to stay, with a good number of upper-mid-range hotels. Often set within historic villas or period residences, these options offer excellent services and wonderful views of the lake shores and surrounding hills. The lakefront area has numerous restaurants and bars where you can dine or enjoy a drink whilst taking in splendid panoramas, as well as a dock from which you can depart to explore the waters of Lario.
An area where you can find more budget-friendly accommodation in Como is certainly around Como Lago Station. Staying in this area is particularly convenient if you arrive by train or plan to use it for excursions to nearby locations.
Staying near the station means not only finding good-value accommodation but also being just a short walk from the city centre and the lake area. There are several guesthouses, modest hotels and welcoming apartments here.
