Ponte di Legno is the perfect destination for those who love the mountains all year round. The municipality of Ponte di Legno sits in the northernmost part of Val Camonica and borders Trentino-Alto Adige via the Tonale Pass. The town is surrounded to the south by the Ortles Cevedale massif (Corno dei Tre Signori and Monte Confinale), an ideal area for hikers who can admire truly spectacular views.
As well as being the northernmost town in Val Camonica, Ponte di Legno is also one of the most populated municipalities in the area. Unfortunately, the locality was hit by Austrian bombardment during the First World War and much of its town centre was destroyed.
Ponte di Legno, however, became known in the early 1900s as a highly sought-after winter destination, so much so that the Ponte di Legno Ski Club was founded here in 1911 and is considered one of Italy’s first ski clubs. In 1912, the Italian Touring Club designated the town as “Italy’s first winter sports and tourism resort“.
Ponte di Legno is part, together with Tonale, of the Adamello Ski resort, which is one of Lombardy’s best-equipped skiing areas. In summer, this destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, as you can enjoy trekking, climbing, via ferrata, mountain biking and hiking.
In winter, winter sports enthusiasts from Lombardy and Trentino can easily reach Ponte di Legno for enjoyable days on the snow. This town is part of the Adamello Ski resort, which boasts four ski areas: Ponte di Legno, Tonale Pass, Presena Glacier and Temù. Enthusiasts can ski on 41 slopes that stretch across around 100 km and range between 1,121 and 3,016 metres in altitude. The slopes are served by modern ski lifts and artificial snow systems. Moreover, in the Ponte di Legno – Tonale resort there’s the opportunity for night skiing on illuminated slopes with a truly evocative atmosphere!
There are also two cross-country skiing centres here, around 30 km of slopes reserved exclusively for cross-country skiing enthusiasts, freeride slopes, a snow park for snowboarders and twenty snowshoe trails. For those wanting to try something new, snowkiting is also possible! Beginners can use the numerous blue slopes to build confidence, whilst those who want to have fun in the snow without skiing can use the sledging and bobsleigh slopes.
But the possibilities don’t end there. Ponte di Legno also has three ice skating rinks and several trails for Fat Biking (or mountain biking on snow). Beyond sport, there’s also good food and entertainment: mountain huts, refuges and après-ski venues are the ideal places to meet up and discover excellent local cuisine. Don’t miss a visit to the Panorama 3000 Glacier, a ski bar located at almost 3,000 metres altitude, built in glass and steel. The refuge is at the arrival point of the panoramic Presena cable car and offers a breathtaking 360° view of Adamello, Lobbie, Presenella and Pian di Neve.
The ski resort of Ponte di Legno is part of the Adamello Ski resort, so the ski pass you purchase here allows you to ski all the slopes in the resort (Ponte di Legno, Tonale Pass, Presena Glacier and Temù). The ski area allows you to purchase different types of ski passes, such as daily, multi-day, and monthly and seasonal passes. You can buy them at the ticket offices at the lifts, on the official website or by recharging the Snowit Card online.
Ponte di Legno is a truly versatile destination that attracts visitors in every season. Whilst in winter many head to the town for winter sports, in summer Ponte di Legno reveals itself as the ideal destination for adventures in the heart of nature. In Ponte di Legno you can organise various outdoor activities ranging from horse riding to mountaineering, from trekking to free climbing. Moreover, during the summer months gastronomic events and festivals are often organised, allowing you to discover the culinary traditions of this territory.
Ponte di Legno’s position, surrounded by three important Italian nature reserves – the Adamello Park, the Adamello Brenta Nature Park and the Stelvio National Park – makes the town an ideal destination for organising walks and treks in the heart of the mountains.
In particular, Val Camonica boasts not only splendid natural heritage but also historical significance. Here you can admire the famous rock engravings (considered a UNESCO World Heritage site) created by the ancient Camuni communities that inhabited the slopes of these mountains. The area was also a conflict zone during the First World War, so you can undertake various treks to discover the trenches and pathways of the Great War.
Ponte di Legno is also perfect for via ferrata enthusiasts as there are beautiful routes such as the Sentiero dei Fiori, the Sentiero degli Austriaci and Cima Payer. The town also has a nine-hole Ponte di Legno Golf Course, located right at the foot of Cima Salimmo.
The mountains of the resort are also ideal for mountain biking, downhill and enduro enthusiasts. There’s a Bike Park with blue, red and black trails that deliver pure adrenaline and exhilarating descents. Beginners, on the other hand, can gain confidence in this activity at the Bike Skill Park where you can take your first steps into the world of mountain biking descents.
The Oglio River Cycle Path is a cycling route of over 280 km that runs alongside the Oglio river and crosses the whole of Val Camonica, also passing through Ponte di Legno. Specifically, the cycle path touches the provinces of Brescia, Bergamo, Cremona and Mantua, always surrounded by splendid scenery. This cycle route is suitable for everyone and can be cycled entirely over several days, or in a day for short stretches.
Ponte di Legno is a town that has managed to preserve intact the charm of a mountain village. The centre is a pedestrian area with fashion shops, local boutiques, bars and restaurants. Among the sites of interest to visit in town is certainly the Church of the Holy Trinity, dating from the 19th century, and the Church of Sant’Apollonio, which was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and contains 14th-century frescoes. Also worth visiting is the Castelpoggio Castle, which has preserved a 580-metre-long perimeter wall with Ghibelline battlements.

In winter for those who want to ski or snowboard it’s certainly more convenient to find lodging near the ski lifts, where there are facilities suited for sports enthusiasts and equipped with ski rooms; those who instead want to spend a holiday focused on relaxation can book a structure with a wellness centre.
The town also boasts several family hotels that pay special attention to families’ needs with games rooms, entertainment, meals tailored for children and many other comforts. The town centre is certainly a lovely area to stay as it’s not far from the ski lifts and is characterised by restaurants and bars where you can enjoy an aperitif with friends.
Ponte di Legno is an easily accessible town from different parts of Italy, both by car and by public transport. You can reach Ponte di Legno by car via the SS42 Tonale and Mendola road, which connects Val Camonica with the cities of Brescia and Bergamo. Those coming from Milan must first take the A4 and then the SS42. From Trento, you need to travel first along the SS43 and then along the SS42.
The nearest railway station is in Edolo, a town about 20 km from Ponte di Legno; the two towns are connected by bus lines. The nearest airports are Bergamo Orio al Serio, which is 117 km away, and Verona Catullo Airport, which is 170 km away. During the winter season, Lombardy airports are connected to Ponte di Legno by Fly Ski Shuttle buses.
