Foppolo

Foppolo is a small village in the Upper Val Brembana, situated at 1,600 metres above sea level and considered one of the most popular winter destinations in the Bergamo mountains. The village’s origins and history remain somewhat unclear, though it is known that in the 16th century, whilst under the rule of the Venetian Republic, it gained a degree of administrative autonomy alongside other communities in the upper valley, and enjoyed tax relief and special privileges.

With the arrival of Austrian sovereignty, however, these territories were subjected to heavy customs duties and taxes that plunged the local economy into crisis. During the First World War, the area witnessed significant battles, as evidenced by the numerous trenches still present today, which can be visited on various guided walks. Only after the Second World War did Foppolo become a popular tourist destination, frequented by visitors from Bergamo keen on winter sports.

The town’s main attractions are undoubtedly its stunning panoramic views and its proximity to cities such as Bergamo, Brescia, Milan and Orio al Serio International Airport. Where to ski in Foppolo

During the winter season, Foppolo becomes the best-known ski resort in the Bergamo Orobie, thanks to its impressive range of slopes and facilities. The town attracts not only skiing enthusiasts but also anyone looking to spend a day on the snow. Foppolo’s slopes are connected, ski-to-ski, with the slopes of Carona Carisole, creating a resort boasting 26 slopes covering approximately 30 km. Twelve lifts allow skiers to ascend from the village at 1,635 metres to the 2,200-metre peak of Monte Valgussera. Those interested in cross-country skiing can enjoy the dedicated run at Convento, whilst snowboarders and freestyle enthusiasts have two snow parks at their disposal. Beginners can take lessons from qualified instructors, and can practise on blue runs, whilst more experienced skiers can tackle the red and black slopes.

Skipass for Foppolo

Foppolo is part of the Brembo Superski resort, so you can purchase a skipass that allows you to ski on all slopes in the area, including Foppolo, Carona Carisole and San Simone. Various types of skipass are available, including hourly passes, day passes, multi-day passes and seasonal passes. Discounts are available for under-16s and children. Skipasses can be purchased at the ticket offices at the lifts or online on the official website.

What to do in summer at Foppolo

Foppolo attracts visitors during the summer months thanks to its magnificent natural heritage. The mountainsides, carpeted with snow in winter, transform into a sea of green in summer and become a destination for those who love walking, hiking and trekking. Foppolo is therefore ideal for those seeking a holiday immersed in nature. Among the easier walks is a circular route at Convento that offers splendid panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Somewhat more demanding are the excursions to Lake delle Trote, Lake Moro and Passo Dordona, where you can nonetheless admire breathtaking unspoilt scenery. The more experienced and well-equipped can attempt to reach the summit of Monte Toro at 2,500 metres above sea level. There are also numerous excursions that allow you to discover Great War sites and visit trenches and military positions. Cycling enthusiasts, particularly those keen on mountain biking, will find many trails to explore through forests and among spectacular peaks.

The village of Foppolo

The village of Foppolo comprises several districts, some of which are now abandoned but can be discovered on a leisurely stroll. Overall, the village has managed to preserve its character as a small rural settlement, making it ideal for a peaceful stay.

A visit to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a must. Built in the 18th century on the site of a previous religious building destroyed by an avalanche, the church is particularly worth visiting for its beautiful interior, which houses three altars and precious artworks, including a 15th-century wooden Pietà.

How to reach Foppolo

The best way to reach Foppolo is certainly by car. From Bergamo, take the SS470 and then the SP2 heading towards Foppolo. From Milan, travel along the A4 towards Venice as far as the Dalmine exit. From there, continue along the SS470dir. From Sondrio, take the SP16 first and then Strada della ValMadre. The town does not have a railway station, and the nearest one is in Bergamo, which is not directly connected to Foppolo by bus.
